Every big idea starts with a small spark. For us, that spark was the arrival of our daughter, Maya. Becoming parents in Dubai made us see the world differently. As she grew, we realised she was experiencing something truly unique, being British, but also being raised in the UAE, surrounded by different cultures, languages, and traditions.

One evening, while reading to her, we noticed there wasn’t a storybook that reflected her world, something that celebrated both her British roots and her life here in the Emirates. That was the moment the idea for Little Brits in the UAE was born: a book created to give children like Maya a sense of pride and belonging in both cultures.

Turning an Idea Into Reality

The idea was clear. The process, however, was not. Publishing a book in the UAE meant navigating unfamiliar territory, approvals, licensing, logistics, and plenty of paperwork. It was daunting, and there were moments we wondered if it was even possible. But with persistence (and many late nights), we kept moving forward.

Bringing the Story to Life

We wanted the book to be more than just a story, it needed to nurture learning too. Drawing on our background in Early Years education, we carefully intertwined EYFS areas such as communication, understanding the world, and personal, social, and emotional development. The aim was simple: for parents, teachers, and children to feel the book was both joyful and meaningful.

The illustrations were another challenge. They had to be fun and engaging, but also reflect everyday life in the UAE in a way children could recognise. After rounds of sketches and feedback, the characters came alive, bright, playful, and full of the spirit of childhood here.

Quality Matters

We wanted this book to last, not just in memory, but physically too. From the thickness of the pages to the feel of the cover, we tested samples and worked closely with suppliers until we found a finish that children could love and parents could be proud to keep.

A First of Its Kind

What began as a bedtime realisation has grown into something far bigger. Little Brits in the UAE is now under contract with double-digit independent British schools and two major educational providers across the Emirates. It’s humbling to see this niche idea become part of classrooms and family homes, helping children feel proud of where they come from and where they are growing up.

The Journey Continues

The road was long and often complicated, but every hurdle was worth it. What started with Maya’s bedtime story has become a book that fills a gap we once felt ourselves. And this is only the beginning, we’re excited to see where Little Brits in the UAE goes next.
